My Deer Rifle: Bergara 6.5 Creedmoor, Manners Stock, Vortex 4-12x

I hunt deer with a 6.5 Creedmoor, and this is the rifle I actually carry: a Bergara, fitted with a Manners stock, topped with a Vortex 4-12x scope.

I picked this setup because it shoots straight and it fits the way I hunt. The Bergara barrel does its part, the Manners stock feels solid and steady in the field, and the Vortex gives me a clear picture without anything fancy getting in the way. At 4x it’s fine for closer work in the woods, and I can dial it up to 12x when I need a good look at a deer farther out.

THE AMMO

I don’t buy my deer loads off the shelf. My son-in-law and I load our own, using the Hornady 143-grain ELD-X bullet. Loading your own takes time, but you know exactly what’s going into the rifle, and that matters to me.

WHAT IT’S DONE IN THE FIELD

I’ve taken several deer with this rifle. The longest shot I remember was around 400 yards.

I’ll be plain about that: a 400-yard shot isn’t something to take lightly. It worked because I know this rifle, I know my loads, and I knew the shot. It’s not a reason to shoot farther than you’re sure of — it’s a reason to practice with the rifle you hunt with until you trust it.

Some of the larger deer I’ve taken are hanging on our wall. That’s the part I’m proudest of — not a number on a box, but deer taken cleanly with a rifle I’ve put real seasons behind.

WHO THIS IS FOR

If you’re a deer hunter looking for a flat-shooting, honest rifle that you can build confidence in season after season, this combination has earned my trust. It’s not about the newest thing on the shelf. It’s about a rifle, a stock, a scope, and loads you know — put together right and hunted with.

If you handload, or you hunt with someone who does, the 143-grain ELD-X is worth a serious look in this caliber. If you don’t handload, that’s fine too — just spend time with whatever load you choose until you know where it hits.

BOTTOM LINE

This is my deer rifle, not a rifle I read about. Bergara 6.5 Creedmoor, Manners stock, Vortex 4-12x, and handloads my son-in-law and I put together. It’s taken several deer for me, out to about 400 yards, and the big ones are on the wall to prove it.
